Mikatagoko Rainbow Line

The Rainbow Line, overlooking both Mikatagoko (Five Lakes of Mikata) and Wakasa Bay, is a winding road where you can fully enjoy the fun of driving with various large and small corners and ups and downs. Observatories installed at various points offer superb views. Furthermore, a 360-degree large panorama extends from the terrace at the summit of Mt. Baijodake.

The Rainbow Line is one of the leading driving routes in the Wakasa region and a superb view spot where you can enjoy a large panorama from the summit. You can overlook the mysterious Mikatagoko (Five Lakes of Mikata) and the horizon of the Sea of Japan.

Excellent Winding Road Running Up the Mountain Ridge

The Mikatagoko Rainbow Line is a winding road of approximately 11.4km that originally opened as the Mikatagoko Toll Road in 1968. It is currently open free of charge and closed at night. It is a road exclusively for vehicles; passage by bicycle or on foot is not allowed.

It is an excellent driving route where you can see both Mikatagoko (Five Lakes of Mikata) and Wakasa Bay, but when actually driving, the impression of a road along the coast or lakeside is thin. With many tight corners such as hairpin curves and ups and downs, it is a skyline running along the mountain ridge.

Panoramic view of the Mikata Five Lakes from the Summit Terrace. The color of the sky reflected on the lake surface changes moment by moment, showing different expressions each time you visit.

Five lakes with different colors and the rias coastline of Wakasa Bay appear in the car window. There is the First Parking Lot (paid) halfway up Mt. Baijodake located between Lake Suigetsu and Wakasa Bay, and from here you can access the park at the summit.

Enjoy a 360-Degree Large Panorama at the Summit Park

From the First Parking Lot, take a lift or cable car to the Rainbow Line Summit Park. At the summit, there are five "Terraces of the Sky" overlooking Mikatagoko (Five Lakes of Mikata) and Wakasa Bay. Cafes, footbaths, and hammock squares are also installed, allowing you to relax and enjoy the magnificent view.

In autumn, the mountains are dyed in red and yellow foliage, creating a spectacular view with the red foliage and blue of the Mikata Five Lakes.

At the summit, there is also Wago Shrine, famous for its blessings for matchmaking and marital harmony. It is a rare shrine nationwide where two people visit facing each other with one shrine in between. You can also enjoy "Kawarake Nage" (earthenware throwing), where you write a wish on a kawarake (small plate) and throw it in the direction of the lake.
