Wakasa Lacquerware Chopsticks with Fine Tips and Good Luck
"Wakasa Lacquerware," the lacquerware of Obama, was named by Sakai Tadakatsu, the lord of the Obama Domain in the early Edo period, and was protected and encouraged as a specialty of the domain. It is characterized by the "Togidashi technique" (polishing out technique) where patterns are created with eggshells, seashells, pine needles, etc., and then layers of lacquer are applied on top and polished.
Wakasa Lacquerware chopsticks made by the Wakasa Lacquerware technique account for more than 80% of Japan's lacquered chopstick production volume. With finely pointed tips, they are considered lucky chopsticks for longevity.
